Hi dear Parent

My 2005 Mantra is "I’m too blessed to be stressed!" Good, eh? I love it. :) And do you know why? It’s because LOVE IS THE ANSWER! Always.

This issue of the Empowered Parenting eJournal 2005 represents the beginning of the seventh year of continuous publication. That means I’ve written about 5000 pages for you, and have invested approximately 37.5 weeks of 8-hour days to this Labor of Love since 1999. To celebrate, there’s a surprise hidden someplace in the issue.

I’m made a big decision: I’m going to use Me up. Every speck. Every crumb. Every bit.

"I always had a dream that when I am asked to give an accounting of my life to a higher court, it will go like this: "Empty your pockets. What you have got left of your life? Any dreams that were unfulfilled? Any unused talent that we gave you when you were born that you still have left?" Any unsaid compliments or bits of love that you haven't spread around?" And, I will answer, "I've nothing to return. I spent everything you gave me." ERMA BOMBECK

So a Blessed 2005! It’s going to be a great year, just wait and see. No, actually, I don’t want you to wait; I want you to participate. Good things are happening. Kindness and caring and truth and honesty are available to you and me now in full measure. You can find yours, easy as pie. It has your name on it! All you have to do is reach out and get it. Most important of all...

You have to believe it.

Believe it with your whole heart. I keep saying it, and I keep reading it more and more (Gee, I think everybody is finally getting the message) in other columns, in magazines, hearing it on radio and television, "What you think is what you get." Or "Act as if it already is and it will come to be."

But there’s a little lesson you may not yet know. It’s really, really important how you ask for what you think you want.

1. Here’s a suggestion how to ask for what you want/need. http://www.invisiblepath.com/

"Please give me what I think that I want (insert need/want) OR SOMETHING BETTER, without causing harm to me or those I love."

2. Make sure you always ask or declare positively.

RIGHT: I ask for good health for me and my family.
WRONG: Please don’t let me or my family get sick.

Reason: What you give attention to is what you attract into your life. You can attract good health or you can attract negatives like sick. Words really do have a power all their own.

Conclusion: Dwell upon the positive and pull it into your life for 2005. In fact, why not intend positively from this day forward. Yes! :)

Remember, I value you, right here, right now, in all that you do.

Love,
Joan

FOOTNOTE #1: I am providing a web site sent to me by EP Parent Cindy. The site is filled with stunning satallite photographs of the Tsunami and the aftermath. This first photograph shows the prestine ocean caressing the shore with the grounds, gardens and houses beyond. Now click on BEFORE and it will switch to the actual wave receding after overwhelming the land. It is almost unbelievable!

Then click on NEXT which will take you to the next of 14 photographs. Then click on BEFORE and see what is left. Some are very shocking to the eyes and to the "heart." We can feel the fear and pain.

The world has come together as One to help the survivors and to rebuild. One of the reasons is that it was a calamity caused by Nature, not Man; therefore, there is no good or evil involved. It was an Act of Nature, or of God if I may.
But Man may have something to do with it after all. I just read a scientific paper that says the global warming which is causing the polar caps to melt at a record pace, making Antarctica smaller and, logically, also less heavy, may have released some of the weighty pressure of the continent over the Earth plates. When the weight lessened, this may have allowed the plates to finally shift and release pressure built up for ages.

FOOTNOTE #2: A great fear during the aftermath is that disease will rise up due to bad water and unsanitary living conditions. Join me, please, in sending Postive Prayers, Thoughts, Messages to the area involved, asking that the water be kept sweet and pure, and that all the survivors, whose bodies are 80%+ water be kept disease-free. Of course, we can do this! The mind is more powerful than anything, especially when we join forces with our Higher Connection.

Thank you, dear one.

Another Good Reason to Use Your Cellphone Headset
As if there were not enough good reasons to use a headset when you're talking on your cellphone (tumors, brain impairment, headaches, car accidents), here's another. A study at the University of Zurich found that exposing people to the electromagnetic fields from cellphones altered their brainwaves during sleep, resulting in sleep disturbances.

LIVING IN HARMONY
Elder's Meditation of the Day - January 4
"Our circle is timeless, flowing, it is a new life emerging from death-life winning out over death."
--Lame Deer, LAKOTA

When we look at the world in the manner which the Great Spirit designed it, we can see why it makes sense to live in harmony with it: the trees grow and bear fruit, the fruit has seeds, the seeds fall to the ground, the ground grows new trees, old trees die to make way for the young. Any time we think we can interrupt this cycle or change it we will experience turmoil and confusion. The Human Cycle exists as the baby becomes the youth, the youth becomes the adult, the adult has children, the adult becomes the Elder, and the Elder teaches the youth. Elders go on to the Spirit World. Spirit comes into babies to produce new life. Flow into the flow. Be the path of least resistance.

My Creator and my Maker, today, teach me to just flow with the river of life.

FOR PARENTS WITH TEENS
The Road to Whatever : Middle-Class Culture and the Crisis of Adolescence
By Elliott Currie
Metropolitan Books (February 1, 2005) ISBN: 0805067639

From the Pulitzer Prize finalist, a sharp and compassionate investigation of the root causes of the epidemic of drug abuse, violence, and despair among "mainstream" American teenagers

In the past few years, it has become painfully clear that all is not well with the children of middle-class America. Beyond the shootings at Columbine, hardly a day goes by without stories of drug use, binge drinking, fatal accidents, and senseless suicides among middle-class adolescents. But the "why" of these tragedies has eluded us.

In this groundbreaking book, acclaimed sociologist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Elliott Currie rejects such predictable answers as TV violence, permissiveness, and inherent evil. Instead, drawing on years of interviews, he links this crisis to a pervasive "culture of exclusion" that has left young people facing an ever more unforgiving world. Currie describes a society in which severe punishment and "zero tolerance" of adolescent misbehavior have become the norm, where "tough love" and medications have replaced engagement and guidance. Broadening his inquiry, he dissects the changes in middle-class life that have enforced newly rigid divides between winners and losers and imposed an extraordinarily harsh culture-and not just on kids.

Vivid, compelling, and deeply empathetic, The Road to Whatever is a profound investigation of what has gone wrong for so many American teenagers and a stark indictment of a society that has lost the will-or the capacity-to care.
Elliott Currie is the author of Confronting Crime, Reckoning, and Crime and Punishment in America (0-8050-6016-2). An internationally recognized authority on youth and crime, he is a professor of criminology, law, and society at the University of California, Irvine.

A RESOLUTION THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE--I promise!

1. Each morning upon arising, and each night before bed, stand before a mirror, look yourself directly in the eyes so you can "reach" You, and say out loud:

I am a worthwhile person.
I deserve to be happy and successful
In all I do and say today.
(place fingertips to temples) I KNOW it.
(Place hands over heart) I BELIEVE it.
(Hands out, palms up) I ACCEPT it. (this is the most important and hardest to do)

2. The reason you say it out loud.
a. you speak the words with lips and tongue
b. you hear the words through ears
c. this process goes out of the brain and back in again, making pathways.
d. you gaze into your own soul when you speak and hear.
e. All these are psychological and spiritual connections for Good.

3. Repeat this process, morning and night, unfailingly, for 21 days.

4. At the end of 21 days, you will see a wonder-filled, improved version of Perfect You, who has always been inside, waiting for release. Guaranteed!

5. Live in the Moment because that is all we have, one moment at a time. In the Moment there is no worry, no concern, no negative. We don't think of the past and perhaps regrets; we don't think of the future and perhaps fears. We stay in the Now, the Moment, where we are calm, centered, at Peace.

6. Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift,
That's why they call it the Present.

PARENT, WALK YOUR TALK!
Elder's Meditation of the Day - December 18
"Parents have to demonstrate the value of trust, respect and honor."
--Haida Gwaii, Traditional Circle of Elders
Children learn more by watching than by listening. If we want our children to understand and value trust, they know it by watching how adults live their lives! If we want the children to be respectful, they will observe what the adults do and say to each other. We need to walk our talk. We need to remember the children are watching.
Grandfather, help me learn these important values: Trust, Respect and Honor.

2. 96% of what we worry about we can do nothing about; only 4% can we influence.
3. When in doubt about Life's Plan, look into the mirror to see The One who is responsibile and who can make a difference in your time on earth.
4. Give all concerns to God; He's up all night anyway. :)

Hi dear Parent,

Blessed Holy Days, whatever your faith. This is such a special time of the year and I’m grateful for all our blessings.

Most of you know that I seek knowledge and wisdom where I may. I study, I think, and then I decide to make it my own, or to discard it because it doesn’t make sense in some way. This week I’ve been reviewing "Keepers of the Children: Native American Wisdom and Parenting" by EP parent Laura M. Ramirez. Http://www.walk-in-peace.com/keepers.html

One of the most important suggestions she makes, in my opinion, is that every parent should have a vision quest on behalf of the child. That is to say, as a Parent we owe it to our child to "believe," to "envision" and to "accept" his/her Highest Potential, Highest Good, Highest Measure in this life.

Doesn’t that make good sense? It’s yet another way of saying what I ask of you: "What you think is what you get." Believe in your child and your child will sense it, know it and believe it. Believe in your child’s abilities. Tell your child that you DO believe. And then "Expect" that the child’s life will come to pass just the way it’s supposed to be... Blessed and whole and Good and fulfilled.

This is my wish for you and your family, dear Parent. That each of you believes in your highest Good.

Love and blessings,
Joan

An Extended Family... "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life." - Richard David Bach

I’m making a special appeal to my Extended Family during this season when we count our blessings and hope and wish that everyone could also share in the Abundance, but this is not always the truth. If you will go to the following web site: http://www.rogerdeankiser.com/ you will learn that some children in orphanages never have a special holiday to celebrate.

Roger is a friend of mine. He’s a gifted writer. He’s lived these stories. Give me a little present by following my request to go here and read any one of his stories: http://www.geocities.com/trampolineone/survive/noframe.htm

And then, buy his audio CD for only $9.95, including postage. Buy more than one if you can, for stocking stuffers. Tell him Joan sent you. :) And I thank you from my heart for doing this if you can.

When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out "Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star."

At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing."

Then, leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part.
Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child, and he added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed what could have
been a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience.

The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else the great master played. Only the classic, " Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."

Perhaps that's the way it is with God. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy.
We try our best, but the results aren't always graceful flowing music. However, with the hand of the Master, our life's work can truly be beautiful.

The next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You may hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing."

May you feel His arms around you and know that His hands are there, helping you turn your feeble attempts into true masterpieces. Remember, God doesn't seem to call the equipped, rather, He equips the 'called.'

Life is more accurately measured by the lives you touch than by the things you acquire. So touch someone by passing this little message along. May God bless you and be with you always!
Love,
Joan xo

For Parents... A Gift to give your Child!

Bedtime

I felt the urge recently to start praying with my children every night before they go to bed.
I was praying every night on my own and they were praying when their mother put them in the bed (at least I think they were).

How will children truly learn how to pray if they don't hear their mother and father pray?
If they only see and hear Mother pray and there is a father in the house, they will assume only women pray.

Well, I was led to change that in my house. I told my wife to never let the kids go to bed without calling me in to pray with them first, as long as I am in town.

The first night I did it, my five-year-old son said when it was his turn, "Thank you God for reminding us to pray."

Most of the things we learn in life we learn from our parents. Imagine the difference in the response to problems children would have when they got older, if they heard their parents pray
every night through their problems.

Prayer is a primary form of communication with God.

We teach our children how to communicate with humans by correcting their grammar and making sure they are polite, but what do we teach them about communicating with God?
Many parents may say that the church, temple or mosque will teach them.

Well, when the schools teach our kids language five days a week, children still talk like what they hear at home.

What are they hearing parents say at home to God? Even silence sends a message. We also teach our kids never to talk to strangers.

Does your child think God by Every/Any Name is a stranger in your house?

A little break in Tradition:

An English professor wrote the words: "WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS NOTHING" on
the blackboard, and directed the students to punctuate it correctly
The men wrote: "Woman, WITHOUT HER MAN, is nothing."
The women wrote: "WOMAN!! WITHOUT HER, man is nothing!"

The "W" in Christmas

Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I had cut back on nonessential obligations - extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending.

Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas. My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six year old.

For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant." I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there would be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.

So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor.

Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song. Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as "Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment - songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So, when my son's class rose to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.
Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads.
Those in the front row- center stage - held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."

The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down -totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W". The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W".

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities. For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:

"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"

And, I believe, He still is.

"I have come to the frightening conclusion
that I am the decisive element.
It is my personal approach
that creates the climate.
It is my daily mood
that makes the weather.
I possess tremendous power
to make life miserable or joyous.
I can be a tool of torture
or an instrument of inspiration,
I can humiliate or humor,
hurt or heal.
In all situations,
it is my response that decides
whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated,
and a person is humanized or de-humanized.
If we treat people as they are,
we make them worse.
If we treat people as they ought to be,
we help them become
what they are capable of becoming."

One day someone's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more.
No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute." Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away ... never to return before we can say good-bye, say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage, and old cars, and children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what.

Life is important, like people we know who are special . . . and so, we keep them close!

Be careful out there, especially on the mall parking lots. The latest hoax to get you to open your car window so that the robber can gain access to you, is to knock on the window and hold up a large bill, saying, "You dropped this!" Don’t fall for it.

"There will always be times when you feel discouraged.
I too have felt despair many times in my life,
but I do not keep a chair for it;
I will not entertain it.
It is not allowed to eat from my plate.
The reason is this:
In my uttermost bones I know something,
as do you.
It is that there can be no despair
when you remember why you came to Earth,
who you serve,
and who sent you here.
The good words we say
and the good deeds we do
are not ours:
They are the words and deeds
of the One who brought us here.
In that spirit,
I hope you will write this on your wall:
When a great ship is in harbor and moored,
it is safe,
there can be no doubt.
But that is not what great ships are built for."

Tulips in the Snow

Tulips have always been a favorite of mine. My first romance novel, "The Sophisticated Mountain Gal" heroine's stage name was Tulip Bloom. She wore a straw hat with a red tulip sticking out the top.

When I had my first signing at a mall book store, my husband Bill had a pot of red tulips sent for my signing table, and he had made for me a pink carved ivory tulip charm for my necklace. And he gave me an enameled metal red tulip to wear on my suit lapel.

Lovely memories on a snowy singular day. Love, Joan

"A successful relationship requires falling in love many times - with the same person."

To Create a New You, or to Teach Your Child for Full Potential

THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present "Seven Wonders of the World." Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:
1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter's Basilica
7. China's Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list.

The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help."

The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the 'Seven Wonders of the World' are: 1. To See 2. To Hear 3. To Touch 4. To Taste 5. To Feel 6. To Laugh 7. And to Love."

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous! A gentle reminder -- that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.

IT’S YOUR LIFE!

When people I mentor arrive at this point I give them some little suggestions:

1. We can never change anyone else, only our response to them.
2. 96% of what we worry about we can do nothing about; only 4% can we influence.
3. When in doubt about Life's Plan, look into the mirror to see The One who is responsibile and who can make a difference in your time on earth.
4. Give all concerns to God; He's up all night anyway. :)

CONSTRUCTING AN IGLOO CAKE
Materials needed:
white icing, blue food coloring, small paint brush, one black licorice stick, one pipe cleaner or fine wire, a scale-size evergreen tree and a Santa if you wish.

After cake is cooled, turn out of the mixing bowl pan onto a large round serving platter. With a sharp paring knife carve a scale-sized "front door" into the cake. Ice the cake with white/vanilla frosting, coating it smoothly.

After the icing is dry, use a small paint brush and outline with blue food coloring "blocks of ice" all over the cake, like an igloo. Thread the pipe cleaner (or other type wire) through the center of the licorice stick, then shape it into a spiral and stick it into the top of the cake. This is the "smoke" rising from the center of the Igloo. Add the tree and figure, and other scale-size creatures for decoration.
